Luis Cabrales Arriaga

DART Advisor

Department of Mechatronics Engineering, CSUMB

Luis Edgar Cabrales Arriaga was born in Tampico, Mexico. He received a BS in Chemical Engineering at the Instituto de Estudios Superiores de Tamaulipas in Altamira, Mexico. He gained experience working as an engineer at M&G Polymers, one of the largest polyester producers in the world. Afterwards, he went on to earn an MS in Chemical Engineering at Texas Tech University (TTU) working on research projects related to polymer science. Then, he joined the Fiber and Biopolymer Research Institute (FBRI) at TTU as a research associate. While working at the Institute, he earned a Ph.D. with specialization in Fibers and Biopolymers from TTU in 2011. From 2012 to 2023 he was one of the engineering founding faculty members of the engineering program at CSUB. He started as assistant professor, then associate professor and finally full professor. In addition, he was the Chair of the Department of Physics and Engineering at California State University-Bakersfield. During his time at CSUB, he worked in multiple research projects collaborating with industry, government, startups, and local partners. Currently, he is the Chair and the Founding Faculty of the Department of Mechatronics Engineering at CSUMB. He has been working toward the creation of a BS in Mechatronics Engineering, which started in Fall 2024. He has worked in several research projects related to water treatment technologies. In specific, he has been working on the treatment of produced water from oilfields. His other research interests are the surface modification to impart oleophobic properties, textiles, and the polymers from renewable resources.
