Our speaker\, Dr. Joseph Fiksel\, will share how municipalities and commercial enterprises are adapting to climate change and other challenges while pursuing long-term environmental and social commitments. Recent crises in California and elsewhere are a stark reminder of our vulnerability to catastrophic forces. How can Monterey Bay communities ensure resilience to sudden shocks\, while striving to protect our natural resources\, enhance our quality of life\, and ensure long-term sustainability? We must begin by recognizing important synergies and trade-offs between sustainability and resilience; e.g.\, renewable energy adoption can reduce the risk of widespread power outages. \nJoseph Fiksel is a proud alumnus of Stanford’s Management Science and Engineering department. During his career as an author\, researcher\, and international consultant\, he has long advocated a “systems approach” that integrates strategic sustainability efforts\, such as decarbonization\, with preparation for sudden disruptions\, including wildfires\, floods\, pandemics\, infrastructure failures\, and supply chain delays. Rising fuel costs\, new regulations\, and growing expectations from passengers and communities are driving this transition.  \n\n\n\nAs passenger traffic and cargo volumes continue to grow\, electrifying airport operations-from airside ground support equipment and terminal facilities to landside transportation-has become essential for reducing emissions\, improving energy resilience\, and controlling long-term costs. Technological advances and funding opportunities are making this shift possible\, but achieving progress requires close collaboration among airport authorities\, technology providers\, utilities\, and policymakers.  \n\n\n\nThe Western region is already seeing progress\, with several airports piloting electric fleets\, sustainable terminal projects\, and energy-efficient infrastructure. These successes demonstrate that electrification is achievable-but scaling it will require clear strategies\, collaboration\, and shared lessons from early deployments.  \n\n\n\nTo explore these opportunities and address the challenges\, Global Transmission Report is organizing the 3rd Annual Conference on Airport Electrification West on October 1\, 2026 at Hilton Los Angeles Airport.
