The Algebra Academy: Empowering Young Minds for 15 Years

Published On: September 9, 2024

The Bruce W. Woolpert Algebra Academy recently completed its 15th year of inspiring the next generation of mathematicians.

This year’s program was a great success, with 95 talented eighth-graders from Santa Cruz, San Benito, and Monterey counties participating in an intensive 5-day algebra enrichment program from July 29th to August 2nd.

The Algebra Academy was founded in 2010 by Graniterock‘s late president, Bruce W. Woolpert, to honor his passion for mathematics education. The program offers high-level instruction from university professors and professionals from Driscoll’s, Graniterock, and Joby Aviation to inspire students and enhance their understanding of mathematics in a supportive environment. The students also had the opportunity to go on a field trip to Cal State University Monterey Bay (CSUMB) to learn more about the college campus a

nd the work of CSUMB’s science and math departments.

New Partnership with Joby Aviation and Monterey Bay DART

This year, the Algebra Academy was excited to welcome Joby Aviation and Monterey Bay Drone Automation & Robotics Technology (DART) to support the Academy. This partnership presents an incredible opportunity to connect the Academy’s legacy with the cutting-edge engineering teams at Joby. These teams shared their stories of how they use math daily in aeronautics and aim to inspire young minds to pursue careers in STEM fields. We are eager to continue inspiring the next generation of mathematicians for many years!
