Algebra Academy: Celebrating 16 Years of STEM Empowerment

It has been a productive year for the Algebra Academy, culminating in another successful program that continues to empower young minds. As the curtains close on this year’s intensive 5-day algebra enrichment, it’s a fitting moment to reflect on the journey, the growth, and the lasting impact of this initiative.
Founded in 2010 by Bruce W. Woolpert, the Algebra Academy marked its 16th year with remarkable strides. This year, the program welcomed an impressive cohort of approximately 130 eighth-grade students from over a dozen schools across San Benito, Santa Cruz, and Monterey counties—a 30% increase in participating students from 2024, when DART and Joby Aviation joined as sponsors. This substantial increase in participation underscores the growing recognition of the Academy’s unique value in fostering mathematical aptitude and a love for STEM and increasing support.
A significant highlight of this year was the addition of Taylor Farms as a new partner, joining the ranks of dedicated supporters such as Graniterock, Driscoll’s, Joby Aviation, and DART. This expanding network of industry leaders reinforces the Academy’s commitment to providing better opportunities for STEM education in Monterey Bay, providing students with invaluable insights into potential career pathways.
“The Algebra Academy continues to be a powerful platform for introducing students to the opportunities that STEM education can unlock,” said Christy Sessions, Executive Director of the Algebra Academy. “With the addition of Taylor Farms this year, we’re expanding the connection between the classroom and the agriculture industry.”
The program, made free for all participants, ran from July 28 to August 1, offering high-level instruction from university professors and professionals. A cornerstone event was the college field trip to Cal State Monterey Bay, designed to immerse students in campus life and expose them to various STEM disciplines. This experience is crucial in demystifying higher education and inspiring students to pursue academic and professional paths in science and technology.
Bringing real-world relevance to the forefront, this year’s Academy also featured a presentation from the DART team about compelling local opportunities, highlighting the diverse and rapidly emerging career pathways within advanced air mobility (AAM) and uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS). By connecting the foundational mathematical concepts learned in the program to these cutting-edge fields, students gained a tangible understanding of how their skills could translate into innovative professions, inspiring them to envision their future roles in these high-growth industries.
Josh Metz, DART Executive Director, emphasized the importance of connecting local students with local, cutting-edge companies. “By connecting Algebra Academy participants with real-world applications of STEM concepts and providing early exposure to high-growth industries, we are helping to build more inclusive talent pathways and spark long-term interest in careers that support financial stability.”
As the Algebra Academy concludes its 16th year, its mission remains steadfast: to inspire the next generation of mathematicians and empower young minds in STEM fields. The program’s consistent evolution, marked by increased student participation and new strategic partnerships, ensures its continued success in shaping the future leaders and innovators of our community.
